First Walk in South Elgin Illinois

After my son left to Arizona, I was left without a car. Which I did not mind since where we live is just a few blocks away from my job. And when I need to travel, I can plan my outings around the times my husband is home from work.

We used to live just a few months ago, in Valley View St Charles, miles away from town! Not having a car, was not an option. But in March, we moved to South Elgin and most places we can either walk to or ride the bus. So I decided one day, to venture out and go for a walk.

One of our favorite places to go to is a library. In every state, city and town, we look for the local library. We will walk, drive or ride the bus to get there.

For me it has always been a safe, inspiring and peaceful place to spend my time, since childhood.

I tracked the distance on Google Maps from my house to the local library, Gail Borden Public Library South Elgin Branch, it is 35 minutes/1.7 miles away. This was doable.

The sky was grey and weather was a bit cool for May.

On my walk, I spotted signs to ride the bus #801 with information on how to locate the schedule and where to find other routes. This was very good information to have. I learned there are bus stops every few blocks. Also very good news since if it rained, I could plan to catch the bus back home.

Once at the library, I updated my address and got a new card. Spent some time refreshing and exploring the library, then headed back home.

On my way back, I stopped by the river, Fox River. I noticed a sign warning of birds nearby.

And I kept on walking.

Next thing I knew... I was being attacked! By a bird!

Never in my entire life did I have a bird get on my head and attack me. And no matter how far I walked away from the bird it came right back on my head... attacking.

I finally made it to the water and remained cautious and aware but also rested from my journey. As I think about it now... it could very well be these birds are territorial and reason why they would be defensive.

As I was leaving I made sure to keep a lookout for the bird... but inside, I laughed. In a weird way this made my day. It really gave me a good laugh even though the top of my head felt a bit sore.

Then I noticed this sign below...

I remembered a journey during winter when me and my boys went on a trail, through the woods, back in Valley View. We walked for miles in the cold and ended up crossing a bridge. Once on the other side we saw a sign that read we were in South Elgin. We stopped at that point and did not continue walking since it was nearing dark and we had a ways to go before arriving home. I know now this same trail is Fox River Trail.

Perhaps, now that we are in South Elgin we can plan a day's walk into St Charles. If we do, I will be sure to share our adventure with you.
