CLIENT CASEWORK: Uncovering Native American Ancestry at the National Archives
On Friday, June 20, I was on-site at the National Archives in Chicago, diving deep into a client's Native American "brick wall" ancestry. My drive from Chicagoland, about 50 miles, served as a vivid reminder that navigating city traffic and potholes can be as unpredictable as the research itself!
For those unfamiliar with the National Archives, it's a truly unique environment. Accessing their invaluable physical records requires a pre-scheduled appointment, a mandatory 30-minute orientation, and a NARA Registration ID. This ID, valid for one year, involves a straightforward registration and identity verification process. Strict rules are always in place, and for good reason: you're handling incredibly fragile and irreplaceable historical documents.
I spent hours meticulously working with delicate papers and records, some over 125 years old . These were carefully folded and preserved within old books and archival boxes. Some of the paper was so thin it was almost translucent—a texture I'd never encountered before. The biggest challenge in this kind of research is maintaining laser focus. It's incredibly easy to get sidetracked by fascinating, unrelated stories that emerge from the records. Before you know it, closing time arrives, and you're already planning your next return trip!
Here are some sample files from my visit.

This on-site research at the National Archives underscores the dedication and specialized access often required to break through complex genealogical "brick walls," especially in areas like Native American ancestry. It's a testament to the fact that not all answers can be found online with a click; some require hands-on, meticulous work with fragile, irreplaceable documents. This is the level of commitment and expertise Budget Genealogy brings to every client's unique lineage.
