Behind the Scenes: Researching Native American "Brick Walls" at the National Archives in Chicago

Updated: Jul 17

CLIENT CASEWORK: Unearthing Native American Ancestry at the National Archives

On Friday, June 27, I made another dedicated trip to the National Archives in Chicago, continuing my pursuit of a client's elusive Native American "brick wall" ancestry. The approximately 50-mile journey from Chicagoland proved surprisingly smooth, as I navigated clever alternate routes, effectively bypassing the usual gauntlet of potholes and heavy traffic.

My time there was a meticulous deep dive into fragile historical documents. I spent hours carefully handling crumbling papers, delicate records, and even books on the verge of disintegration. These irreplaceable files are often housed in aging volumes, specialized containers, and sturdy archival boxes. This visit presented a particularly unique challenge: gingerly unrolling remarkably long lists of names. One such document unfurled so extensively that it spilled over the edge of the table and onto the floor – a testament to the sheer volume of information contained within!

Below, you'll find sample files from my visit, including a glimpse of that impressive, lengthy list.

This dedicated, hands-on research at the National Archives underscores the profound depth and diligence often required to uncover complex ancestral lines, especially when dealing with areas as intricate as Native American ancestry. It highlights that breakthroughs often emerge not just from knowing where to look, but from the patient, physical work of sifting through vast, delicate collections—like those remarkably long lists—where every name could hold a crucial clue. This is the persistent, expert effort Budget Genealogy brings to every client's unique journey.
