CASE WORK: JAN 14

LAST WEEK ON CASE WORK:

(Week of Jan 14)

Due to a week of feeling under the weather I was not able to accomplish as much as hoped but I did manage to finalize one case. Sent files with report and work notes.

Continued working on the clean up case and extensive research for a client. Previewed book, NOBODY WILL TELL YOU THIS BUT ME By Bess Kalb, and notes sent from client with photos of family members. Created stories on ancestry.com for these specific ancestors using the information collected from the book and began uploading cropped and edited images.

Had an assessment with a new client. A close family friend who is eager to learn about their family. I am especially excited to start this journey with her. It will take me back to my father's homeland, Dominican Republic. This case begins with a grandmother who is one of 12 children! Client is interested in also having DNA tests completed and added to the family tree once we begin.

DISCOVERIES MADE

(These are notes taken from the Book Titled: NOBODY WILL TELL YOU THIS BUT ME by Bess Kalb)

Rose was a Russian immigrant. The story was told to Bess by her grandmother about coming to America.

It started with traveling in a train from Brest to the Russian town on the Austrian border. She met a Jewish man there who took her into the night and they walked for many hours never looking back. Her feet bled from all the walking. He brought her to a checkpoint leaving her at a "forwarding house." The house was full of other Jewish families making the same treacherous journey. At the house, Rose was subject to harsh words from the woman running it. But Rose knew she was a survivor and the chances of her coming this far was "improbable."

Next day, she was taken along with two other girls and placed into a potato cart driven by horses. They were brought into another "forwarding house," where they were given fresh milk and clean clothes to wear. After that a man woke her and led her along with another family to a train station headed for Hamburg where the boat going to America would be waiting.

INTERESTING FIND

Last month I discovered the fatal accident of Max, my client's immigrant ancestor who at 96 years old was crossing the street and hit!

Well, last week...as told to Bess by her grandmother and shared in this book we learn the back story of what happened. Max was quite a heavy drinker. And leaving the synagogue after having a little too much wine and possibly some of his homemade vodka... walking home and... yes was hit. It's tragic and sad. Interesting how some details are later discovered and passed down. Sometimes with a little more flavor I might add. Do you have any stories trickling down your tree about ancestors? Stories that you are unsure of its validity and want to learn more? Share in comments or private message! I would love to hear about your family history!
